Canada, host country to the 26th World Youth and Student Travel Conference (WYSTC), has certainly not failed to realise the power of youth travel – the traveller who tends to stay longer and spend more than the average tourist, attract friends and family to a destination, and return to a destination later in life.
In preparation for WYSTC 2017 in Montreal, Canada from 26 to 29 September, WYSE Travel Confederation has published, Youth Travel and Canada. Drawing on findings from WYSE Travel Confederation’s New Horizons III survey, the report outlines the main characteristics of the country’s in- and outbound youth and student travellers.

“Young people tend to take longer trips and therefore spend more in total than the average tourist – Canada is an excellent example,” said David Chapman, Director General of WYSE Travel Confederation.
“Young visitors to Canada spent on average EUR 4,800 on a trip, EUR 3,900 of which was spent in the destination – higher than the global average of EUR 3,000.”
WYSE research found that young Canadians travelling abroad reported trips mainly for holiday. The main destination countries for young Canadians were the USA, the UK, France and Italy. Compared to other travellers, Canadians seem to be more likely to visit the region of South America than other travellers and more likely to seek nature, culture and relaxation-based activities while travelling. WYSE research also found that the average income of Canadian outbound travellers was relatively high and the number of long trips abroad (7 nights or more) was higher than the global average.
