YHA recently commissioned a report on recommendations to grow the Australian Working Holiday Maker scheme which was submitted to the Australian Coalition Government and the Labour Opposition in late April. The report provides an analysis on the current status of the scheme and includes key recommendations to help offset a further predicted decline in WHM arrivals in coming years.

A re-cap on the announcement from the Government regarding the status of Australia’s ‘backpacker tax’:
- Assistant Treasurer Kelly O’Dwyer has announced a “whole of government” review into the working holiday visas
- The review will mean the Government’s planned backpacker tax, which would see backpacker paying 32.5 per cent tax from July 1, is delayed by six months
- The review will look at “the agricultural sector more broadly” to assess whether rural and regional communities have the right labour force in place to support seasonal industries such as fruit-picking
- Outcomes from the review will be enacted from January 1, 2017
