Festivals have been a major tourism growth area in recent years, as destinations around the world stage new multi-day events showcasing musical acts, fine arts and other cultural activities. The main aim of these activities is to attract visitors and generate spending and one of the many destinations promoting its festivals scene this summer is New York City.

New York City’s official marketing, tourism and partnership organisation, NYC & Company, attracts music lovers with its diverse concerts, performances and festivals taking place throughout the city during the summer months.

President and CEO of NYC & Company, Fred Dixon says; “Each summer, music enthusiasts come to New York City to experience firsthand the premier talent and world-class venues found throughout the five boroughs. This summer offers countless opportunities for fans of all ages and interests to enjoy New York City’s exciting music scene.”

According to the findings from WYSE Travel Confederation’s Festivals and the Millennial Traveller report, released earlier this year, 41% of millennial festival goers prefer a festival or event location close to a big city. In terms of spending, 30% of festival attendees reported that they spent between EUR 100 to EUR 200 in total, and 21% reported that they spent between EUR 200 to EUR 500 at festivals.

WYSE research also found that those who spent more on their total trip tended to spend more once at the festival.

Young travellers are stimulated to travel by special events and the increasing adoption of event season pricing by hostels indicates the positive effect festivals and other major events have on destination economies, according to findings from another WYSE report – New Horizons III study (2013) .

  • BAM Rhythm and Blues Festival
