The Youth Segment: who they are and how to communicate with them

Tourism Australia defines the youth segment as males and females, aged between 18 and 30 years. This group are commonly referred to as Generation Y with alternative labels such as‘Millennials’ and the ‘Dot.Com generation’.

Youth perceptions of Australian experiences: international research conducted by Tourism Australia

In 2008 Tourism Australia conducted research into the international youth market’s perception of Australia and the various experiences on offer. The research was conducted with youth travellers aged between 18 and 29 in the UK, France, China and New Zealand, who are yet to visit Australia and do not have dependent children.

During the year ended 30 June 2012, there were 5,536,996 visitors to Australia aged 15 years and over. This was a slight increase of 1% from the year ended 30 June 2011.

International Visitors Australia December 2011 During the year ended 31 December 2011, there were 5,439,255 visitors to Australia aged 15 years and over. This remained steady compared with the year ended 31 December 2010. During the year ended 31 December 2010 there were 5,440,894 visitors to Australia aged 15 years and over. This was an increase of 5% from the year ended 31 December 2009. Tourism Research Australia’s latest International Visitors Survey has reported an increase in backpacker numbers to Australia, a longer length of stay and larger average spend in 2009 compared to 2008.
